Two Champions of the last three years will meet in Åland, but in stead of a title fight, the teams are fighting to avoid relegation. IFK Mariehamn is currently in the relegation playoff spot as 11th and they are four points behind their visitors who are 9th but IFK has played one game less. The teams have met this season once in Seinäjoki with both teams sharing a point 1-1. The last time SJK beat IFK Mariehamn in Mariehamn was when they won their championship title.

IFKM changed a lot after last season but still they were confident that they would be fighting for Euro Cup places against this season. They always counted on their good defense, but it has been horrible this season. Also their young goalkeepers Nordqvist and Lepola have not been solid so they have conceded a lot of goals.

IFKM has now acquired some new players to make the team better. In goal they brought from Ukrainen Igor Levchenko. In defense, they loaned from KuPS Hamed Coulibaly and as attacking midfielder they bought Keaton Isaksson from PS Kemi. Now the team has a bit of width and the battle for staring lineup places is tougher.

The need to change was strong as they have gotten only 3 points from their last six games and they have lost three games in a row. Last season IFKM was one of the best home teams in the league but this season at the WH Arena, they have only gotten three wins, one draw and six losses.

SJK has also needed a wake-up call this season as they have not really got going at all.  They have missed some wingers from the line-up and now they have got two of them. They just hired Trinidad and Tobago international Shahdon Winchester and former Ukrainian international Denys Oliynyk. They also got in midfield former Kenyan international Peter Opiyo so there is more competition for the starting line-up places. It is not sure yet though if they are able to play in this game.

SJK has lost their last two matches without scoring any goals. Away from home they have been poor as they have only gotten one win and six points from ten games. The only away win also came against TPS and the match was played on neutral ground. The resources that SJK has is one of the biggest in the league so the pressure to succeed is also greater.

The teams have met this season once in Seinäjoki with both teams sharing a point 1-1. The last time SJK beat IFK Mariehamn in Mariehamn was when they won their championship title.
