This is the first leg of the Veikkausliiga playoffs between KPV who finished 2nd in the Ykkönen this season and TPS who finished 11th in the Veikkausliiga. The second leg is played on Saturday in Turku. This match starts already at 14:00 as the Kokkola stadium does not have sufficient lights so they will have to play early to have enough sun light.

KPV fought for automatic promotion right until the end but their 2-1 loss to HIFK in the penultimate round was enough to drop them second. KPV had a very good end to their season where they won eight and lost only two of their last 10 games. Especially at home they have been in good form as they were the best home team in Ykkönen with a 11-2-1 record.  They had problems at the start of the season to score goals, but in those last 10 games, they scored 27 goals so an average of 2.7 goals per match. They managed to keep 11 clean sheets this season so 40% of their matches.

TPS had a similar season as KPV when it came to scoring goals. They had problems with it until they signed Sterling Yateke as their striker. After him, they were able to score goals more freely. In their last 10 games, they scored an average of 1.8 goals per game. They finished their season with three losses but those three losses came against the Top-3 teams in the Veikkausliiga. With the exception of their last game against winners HJK, TPS was able to challenge both KuPS and RoPS. TPS was one of the worst away teams in the league with a 2-3-12 record. Only one of those wins came outside of the Veritas stadium and that was against poor FC Lahti a few rounds from the end.
