Finnish goalkeeper Niki Mäenpää signs with Bristol City

EFL Championship side Bristol City announced today that they have done a one year deal with Finnish goalkeeper Niki Mäenpää

33-Year old Finnish international was free to join after leaving Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion earlier in the summer. Mäenpää spent the last three seasons with Brighton but never got a proper chance with the Premier League club. In the 11 matches that he did play, he kept 6 clean sheets.

He has now signed a one year deal which has an option for one more year. Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson was very happy with the signing. “Niki has really impressed us during his trial period. He has the technical and personable skills to fit in nicely to this squad. “He has spent a couple of seasons in the shadows and now he’s hungry to prove himself as a top goalkeeper.”

Having began his career with French side RC Lens in 2003, the goalkeeper moved to FC Den Bosch three years later. He then spent three seasons with Willem II, before completing a transfer to AZ Alkmaar in 2011, which followed a move to VVV-Venlo in 2012. Mäenpää spent three campaigns with VVV-Venlo, including one top-flight Eredivisie season, and he won the club’ Player of the Season award, before joining Albion in 2015.

Mäenpää has played 26 times for Finland.
